Jean Lorrah has a way with words that really paints a good picture of a scene and really does draw the reader into a story, but the opening really doesn't have that feel to it. I'll be honest, it was a slow read to start. Star Trek: Metamorphosis has, what I admit, an excellent concept for a story: What if Commander Data finally got his 'wish' and became Human? It was this reason alone that I picked up the book, even if I know that no vast, lasting change would result of this tale. Warning: This review will contain minor spoilers. I also like the book's thematic concept of having a soul and how it links to the main character's journey (and overall role in the Star Trek series). I always had a bit of a crush on Data, so I was strangely overjoyed (yet sad) when he had to let go of his love, Talia. and the disadvantages of being human (from impulsiveness, physical invulnerability and emotional suffering from unrequited love) as the Enterprise tries to stop a mysteriously belligerent alien race called the Kornor.Īlthough some parts were slower than others, the book was, in retrospect, a thoughtful and poignant story about Data and his desire to become human. Along with an Elysian woman, Talia as a fellow questor, Data accomplishes the quest and is granted his ultimate wish - to be human! At first enthralled, the science-fiction Pinocchio soon discovers the advantages. Here, Data finds himself on mystical planet, Elysian, where he goes on a quest conducted by the Elysians' gods. Commander Data - as the main character! The story takes place after the events of The Next Generation episode, "Measure of a Man" (where Data has to fight for his rights as a sentient being).

This book features one of my all-time favorite Star Trek characters - the sentient android Lt.

Besides all that, Jean has a one-off vampire novel, Blood Will Tell, and of course her four professional Star Trek novels. Be sure to look for her Nessie's Grotto books with Lois, and folk tale favorite Rooster Under the Table. She is also a screenwriter, with an optioned screenplay, Coal for Christmas, written with Lois Wickstrom. In real life, she frequently collaborates with other authors. Jean specializes in Intimate Adventure, stories in which people with opposing points of view must resolve conflicts by working together, usually with lives at stake.

Jean is the creator of the Savage Empire series and co-author of the Sime~Gen series created by Jacqueline Lichtenberg. As you can see from her self-portrait, she is currently learning to paint as well. More recently, having retired from teaching (but not from writing), Jean took up art, and has become a prize-winning artist in graphite. In childhood she lived a life of the imagination far more vivid than the gloomy steel town she grew up in, yet she also succeeded in school, ultimately growing up to become a high school teacher and later a university professor as she continued her life of the mind into creative writing.

The motto of the Sime~Gen universe fits Jean Lorrah's writing career, for her work is always on some sort of borderland. WHERE SIME AND GEN MEET, CREATIVITY HAPPENS
